Padma Awards History

Padma Awards were conferred for the first time in 1954 and since then they are announced every year on the Republic Day of India. They were not given in the years 1977, 1978 and 1993-1997 due to unavoidable circumstances.

Every individual irrespective of caste, creed, race, sex or religion is eligible for the award without any discrimination. Government servants who work in PSUs except for doctors and scientists are not eligible for the awards.

Padma Award is given to the same person for the second time only after a period of 5 years after the first award was given.  Padma awards are given posthumously only in very exceptional cases. The total number of Padma Awards in the three categories cannot extend to 120. In case of the award is given to a duo, it is counted as one.

According to Article 15 of Indian Constitution, Padma Award cannot be used as a title by an individual who has received it.

The award consists of a medal and a certificate. The medal of all three categories is the same except for the fact that embossing on either side of the medal is done using platinum in the Padma Vibhushan medal, gold in Padma Bhushan and stainless steel in Padma Shri.
