The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) provides a civil service training facility for the Civil Services including IAS, IPS etc. Its main objective is to educate public servants in the IAS cadre and to deliver the Group-A Central Civil Services Foundation Course. The Academy is managed by the Indian government and is in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.

How Long is IAS Training at LBSNAA?

A candidate is required to participate in the 2-year LBSNAA IAS training programme after clearing the UPSC IAS Exam. Members of various public service positions, such as IFS, IPS, IRS, IFoS, etc., must complete a two-year training curriculum that prepares them for working productively in difficult circumstances before joining their respective cadres and services.

The IAS Training at LBSNAA is the first step in this process. They meet their co-workers for the first time at LBSNAA. The LBSNAA training period lasts for a total of two years and is broken down into the following segments.

LBSNAA Training Stages

The training period at LBSNAA can be divided into the following stages Foundation Course, Phase I,  Bharat Darshan, Academics Module and so on as mentioned below:

Foundation Course

Candidates for grade A positions such as IAS, IPS, and IFS who have been offered positions are invited to enrol in a 3-month or 15-week Common Foundation Course at LBSNAA, which typically runs from August to December. After that, candidates from various services enrol in various training institutes. For example, IFS candidates enrol in the Foreign Services Institute in New Delhi, IRS candidates enrol in the National Academy of Direct Taxes, and Nagpur and IAS candidates must remain at LBSNAA.

Phase I

Bharat Darshan: The IAS probationers are split up into smaller groups and given a brief tour of India. This training session typically lasts 45 to 50 days, during which time learners are taken to significant regions of the nation. This component of training counts as exposure to India’s diverse and rich cultural history.

Academic Modules: The duration of this 15-week training course is. Aspirants begin there at six in the morning with a little workout before heading to lectures and night time cultural events. Academic lectures cover topics such as project management, national security, e-government, soft skills, and policymaking.

District Training

The next stage is a one-year district-level training curriculum where IAS members join a district government and become familiar with its policies, programmes, and administrative framework.

Phase 2

The officers are heard sharing their phase 1 training experiences with their colleagues. IAS officers may share their thoughts and disagreements in these venues, discover common ground, and learn new things through intellectual dialogue. In order to benefit from their knowledge and expertise, discussions with subject-matter experts are held in the end.

Assistant Secretaryship

After the training period, Assistant Secretaryship Officers join their respective departments, where they work for a period as the joint secretary’s assistant (under the joint secretary).

Do IAS Officers Get Paid During Training at LBSNAA

An IAS trainee at LBSNAA gets a total salary of Rs 56,000 each month. However, they receive a stipend rather than a salary as payment. Due to mess and hotel fees, the total remuneration is reduced. Other things like shopping for uniforms and personal essentials will be necessary. A stipend of Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 is granted each month after deducting all fees and other expenses.

Is there any fees in LBSNAA?

The government pays new IAS trainees an approximate stipend of Rs. 40,000 per month while they are in training. However, the monthly stipend is reduced to cover lodging costs. The cost of lodging per month is: (including water, and electricity charges)

  • Single Occupancy Accommodation: Rs.350 per head.
  • Double Occupancy Accommodation: Rs.175 per head.

What happens after training at LBSNAA?

The trainees split up based on their services at their respective training locations after the LBSNAA training session is over. However, district training and a tour of India (Bharat Darshan) are additionally offered for IAS officers at the same institution, LBSNAA.
