Arjuna Award History

The Arjuna Award was established in 1961 and is named after Arjuna, the major character of the historic Indian epic Mahabharata. It is awarded by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in honour of exceptional sporting accomplishment. Before the Khel Ratna was created, it was India’s highest athletic honour.

The Arjuna Award, given out for consistently excellent performance over a four-year period, comes with a statuette of Arjuna, a certificate, and a monetary award. PK Banerjee, an Olympian for India in football, was one of the 20 recipients of the Arjuna Award in its first year, 1961. Anna Lumsden, an Indian hockey player, was the first woman to receive the Arjuna Award.

A Khel Ratna recipient is not eligible to be nominated for the Arjuna Award under the existing regulations. The Khel Ratna can, however, be nominated for an Arjuna winner. Over time, the government changed the requirements for the Arjuna Award. According to the updated rules, a player must not only have consistently performed well at the international level over the previous four years but also receive that year’s recommendation for excellence.
