World Press Freedom Day History

World Press Freedom Day was first conceived when a group of African journalists gathered in Namibia for a UNESCO meeting on promoting an independent and pluralistic press. They suggested designating May 3rd as a global day to recognize and defend press freedom.

The concept was later accepted by the UNESCO General Conference in 1993, and the UN General Assembly declared that May 3rd would become the annual date for World Press Freedom Day. Since then, the day has been observed annually to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom and the need to maintain the independence of the media.

World Press Freedom Day Celebrations

Awards from UNESCO were given to deserving institutions, groups, or individuals who have made honourable contributions to the development and defence of press freedom around the globe. In India, media journalists who risked their lives to report the news or, occasionally, lost their lives in the line of duty itself are honoured.

On this day in India, numerous government officials and ministers participate in the planning of numerous events, including art exhibitions and honour awards for journalists who have risked their lives while reporting.

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, causes the celebrations to go online. The 2020 World Press Freedom Conference gives journalists, members of civil society, national authorities, academics, and others the chance to explore new threats to press freedom and journalistic safety and to collaborate on finding answers. The conference has been held annually since 1993. It will take place in The Hague, Netherlands, from October 18–20, 2020.

World Press Freedom Index 2024

The latest World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reveals a disturbing trend: press freedom is under attack by those who should be protecting it – political authorities themselves. This decline is evident in the significant drop (7.6 points) of the ‘political’ indicator, one of five metrics used to measure global press freedom.

Despite a slight improvement in ranking from 161st in 2023 to 159th in 2024, this was attributed to worsening conditions in other countries rather than improvements in India.
India is ranked behind Turkey (158), Pakistan (152) and Sri Lanka (159).
Norway and Denmark are at the top of the RSF table, indicating the highest levels of press freedom, while Eritrea and Syria are at the bottom, reflecting the least freedom.
Scores for India worsened in four out of five categories: political context, legal framework, economic context, and sociocultural context.
- The only category that did not worsen was the security indicator.

United States Press Freedom

The U.S. saw a decline in press freedom, with its score falling from 71.22 to 66.59.
The country’s ranking dropped from 45th to 55th, influenced by political attitudes towards the media.

India’s rank improved from 161 in 2023 to 159 in 2024 out of 180 nations in the World Press Freedom Index 2024, but this was because other countries had slipped in their rankings.

Evaluation Criteria

The score for each country or territory is determined using five contextual indicators:

Political Context: Examines how political dynamics impact press freedom.
Legal Framework: Assesses the laws and regulations that govern media operations and their enforcement.
Economic Context: Considers the economic environment and its effect on the media.
Sociocultural Context: Evaluates cultural and social factors that may influence media freedom.

India’s position among the five was best in the legislative indicator category (143) and worst in the area of journalists’ safety (162).
