What Happened in Kohat?

According to Pakistani officials, an explosives-laden vehicle was driven into the police compound during Friday prayers. The explosion struck a mosque where police personnel, their families and other worshippers had gathered.

Following the blast, armed militants attempted to enter the police facility, leading to an exchange of fire with security personnel. The police compound also housed counterterrorism and other security units.

The attack therefore involved two major phases:

Security forces subsequently conducted a clearance operation inside the compound. AP reported that the standoff continued for approximately 20 hours before Pakistani forces declared the operation concluded.

Death Toll and Casualties

An initial Reuters report put the death toll at 16, with 57 injured. Later Pakistani health officials reported 21 deaths and 103 injuries, including 15 police personnel among those killed.

By 19 September 2026, AFP reporting cited by Reuters put the death toll at 31, showing that casualty figures were still being revised.

Later Pakistani reporting said Ittehadul Mujahideen Pakistan, associated with Afghanistan-based militant commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, claimed responsibility.
