The 17th Kathakali Festival 2026 is being organised from 18 to 20 September 2026 at the Bharata Kalakshetra Auditorium in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. The festival is organised by the Kalakshetra Foundation under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The three-day festival celebrates Kathakali, Kerala’s renowned classical dance-drama tradition, through performances, lecture-demonstrations and student presentations.

The theme of the 17th Kathakali Festival is:

“Kadha Rasa Sangama – Confluence of Essence of Stories”

The theme highlights the storytelling tradition of Kathakali and its ability to bring together diverse narratives through dance, drama, music, gestures and facial expressions.

Major Performances

Mandodari

The festival opened with “Mandodari”, presented by Sadanam Academy. Based on the Ramayana, the production explores the final moments of Ravana’s life and Mandodari’s response to his death.

The Old Man and the Sea

On 19 September, Kerala Kalamandalam will present The Old Man and the Sea, a Kathakali adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s celebrated novel.

The production focuses on perseverance, determination and struggle through the story of Santiago, the fisherman.

Rugmangada Charitham

The festival will conclude on 20 September with “Rugmangada Charitham”, presented by Margi Theatre.

It portrays the devotion of King Rugmangada and the test of his faith and commitment to observing Ekadasi.

What is Kathakali?

Kathakali is a traditional classical dance-drama form associated with Kerala. It combines several artistic elements, including:

Dance and dramatic acting
Carnatic and traditional musical elements
Elaborate costumes and makeup
Facial expressions
Hand gestures or mudras
Mythological and literary narratives

Traditional Kathakali stories are frequently based on the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranic literature.

History of Kalakshetra Foundation

The Kalakshetra Foundation was established in 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale in Chennai.

The institution has played an important role in the preservation, teaching and dissemination of India’s classical arts and traditional cultural heritage. It is particularly associated with Bharatanatyam, while also supporting traditional music, dance, crafts and cultural education.

Lecture-Demonstrations

The festival also includes lecture-demonstrations from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM on all three days at Rukmini Arangam.

These sessions are followed by Kathakali presentations by students of the Kalakshetra Foundation, linking formal learning with live performance.
