History of Independence Day 2023

Independence Day in India is celebrated every year on 15 August. The day marks India’s freedom from the British rule. It is a national holiday for government and private offices. At the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the East India Company defeated the Nawab of Bengal, marks as the beginning of the period of British rule in India. A significant but ultimately unsuccessful uprising against British rule took place in 1857 with the Indian Rebellion or First War of Independence or also known as Revolt of 1857.

The Indian National Congress, the country of India’s first political organization, was established in 1885. Additionally, activists in India demanded “Swaraj” or self-rule after World War I concluded in 1918.

At INC Session in Lahore in 1929, the Indian Nation Congress declared “Purna Swaraj,” or India’s independence. The plan was finally agreed upon after numerous sessions and discussions between the British administration and the Indian Parliament and Lord Mountbatten, the final viceroy of India before independence.

Lord Mountbatten partitioned British India into two newly independent states, India and Pakistan, on August 15, 1947. This day commemorates India’s first declaration of independence in 1947.
