Key Findings of the Report

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

  • Sitting MPs with criminal cases: 40% of the 763 Sitting MPs analyzed have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Sitting MPs with serious criminal cases: 25% of the 763 Sitting MPs have declared serious criminal cases, including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women, etc.
  • States with Highest Percentage of Sitting MPs with Criminal Cases: Kerala has 79%, Bihar has 73%, Maharashtra has 57%, Telangana has 54%, and Delhi has 50% of their MPs declaring criminal cases against themselves.
  • States with Highest Percentage of Sitting MPs with Serious Criminal Cases: Bihar has 50%, Telangana has 38%, Kerala has 34%, Maharashtra has 34%, and Uttar Pradesh has 34% of their MPs declaring serious criminal cases against themselves.
  • Party wise Percentage of Sitting MPs with Criminal Cases: The BJP has 36%, INC has 53%, AITC has 39%, RJD has 83%, CPI(M) has 75%, AAP has 27%, YSRCP has 42%, and NCP has 38% of their MPs declaring criminal cases against themselves.
  • Party wise Percentage of Sitting MPs with Serious Criminal Cases: The BJP has 25%, INC has 32%, AITC has 19%, RJD has 50%, CPI(M) has 25%, AAP has 9%, YSRCP has 35%, and NCP has 25% of their MPs declaring serious criminal cases against themselves.
  • Sitting MPs with cases related to murder: 11 Sitting MPs have declared cases related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302).
  • Sitting MPs with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 32 Sitting MPs have declared cases of attempt to murder (IPC Section-307).
  • Sitting MPs with cases related to Crimes against Women: 21 Sitting MPs have declared cases related to crimes against women. Out of these 21 MPs, 4 have declared cases related to rape (IPC Section-376).

  • Average Assets of Sitting MPs: The average of assets per MP from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is Rs 38.33 Crores.
  • Average Assets of Sitting MPs with declared criminal cases Vs no Criminal Cases: The average assets of MPs with declared criminal cases is Rs 50.03 Crores. As compared to this, the average assets of MPs with no criminal cases is Rs 30.50 Crores.
  • State with Highest Average Assets of MPs: The state with the highest average assets per MP is Telangana with average assets of Rs 262.26 crores, followed by Andhra Pradesh with average assets of Rs 150.76 crores and Punjab with average assets of Rs 88.94 crores.
  • Party wise average assets: Among the major parties, the average assets for BJP MPs analyzed is Rs 18.31 crores, INC MPs have average assets of Rs 39.12 crores, AITC MPs have average assets worth Rs. 8.72, YSRCP MPs have average assets worth Rs. 153.76 crores, TRS MPs have average assets worth Rs. 383.51 crores, NCP MPs have average assets worth Rs. 30.11 crores and AAP MPs have average assets of Rs. 119.84 crores.
  • Billionaire MPs: Out of the 763 MPs analyzed, 53 (7%) are Billionaires.
  • Total assets of Sitting MPs: The total assets of 763 sitting MPs are Rs. 29,251 Crores.
