Goa Liberation Day 2023

Goa Liberation Day is celebrated on December 19th to commemorate the end of Portuguese rule in Goa. In 1961, the Indian Army captured Goa, ending 451 years of Portuguese rule. The military operation to liberate Goa was called “Operation Vijay”.

On December 18 and 19, 1961, Indian troops captured Goa with little resistance. The Governor-general of Portuguese India, Manuel António Vassalo e Silva, signed an instrument of surrender.
