About Coal India Limited (CIL)
- It is an Indian public sector undertaking and the largest government-owned coal producer in the world. (Established – 1975)
- Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Coal. (HQ-Kolkata)
- It accounts for around 82% of the total Coal production in India.
- Nationalisation of Coal was done in two phases:
- First with the coking coal mines in 1971-72
- Non-coking coal mines in 1973.
- Coking coal can be heated without air to produce coke, while non-coking coal cannot.
