Factors Determine UPSC Cut-Off Marks
Only General Studies I is used to determine the UPSC prelims cut-off scores. The General Studies II or CSAT exam is purely qualifying in nature and does not count towards merit ranking. To qualify for the main exams, applicants must pass the GS II paper with a minimum score of 33%.
The UPSC cut-off marks are the scores of the last applicant chosen, depending on the availability of positions in a given category. Only after the UPSC Civil Services Exam for that particular year’s final result is announced does the UPSC share the cut-off marks for both the Preliminary and Main Exam. Regarding the selection of applicants based on cut-off scores, UPSC has clarified a few issues:
- Case 1– If two candidates receive the same total score in the Civil Services Examination, the Commission breaks the tie by awarding a higher rank to the one who receives the highest combined score in the mandatory papers and IAS interviews.
- Case 2– The older candidate will be given a better rank if two candidates receive similar scores on all of their exams, including the mandatory ones and the UPSC personality tests.
- Case 3– If two candidates have the same age and score equally on both the mandatory exams and the UPSC CSE interview, the candidate with the higher score on the mandatory exams will be given a higher rank.
