Context: The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) under Operation ATALANTA has proposed a joint naval exercise with the Indian Navy.
About Operation Atlanta
- Operation Atlanta is the European Union’s military operation to contribute to maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, started in 2008.
- Its initial focus was on combating piracy and armed robbery off the Somali Coast.
- Over the years, it has diversified its operations.
- It now protects World Food Programme vessels and monitors illegal activities such as drug trafficking and unregulated fishing.
Operation Atlanta is a significant anti-Naxal initiative launched by Indian security forces with the primary goal of countering left-wing extremism (LWE) in the country.
This strategic operation focuses on Naxal-affected areas, especially in states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Maharashtra. It involves coordinated efforts between central paramilitary forces and state police to dismantle Naxal strongholds, secure remote regions, and restore civilian governance.
Launched as part of the government’s broader LWE strategy, Operation Atlanta includes intelligence-based operations, the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, and the improvement of infrastructure in affected areas.
The operation also emphasises community engagement and development to win the trust of local populations and weaken Naxal influence.
