Why in News?

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan visited Nyedar Namlo in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, on 9 September 2026 during his visit to the state. He offered prayers and interacted with local community members.

The visit highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of Nyedar Namlo and the indigenous traditions of Arunachal Pradesh.

What is Nyedar Namlo?

Nyedar Namlo is a sacred place of worship and community centre associated with the Donyi-Polo faith, an indigenous belief system followed by several tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh.

It has a particularly important association with the Nyishi community. Apart from religious activities, Nyedar Namlo provides a space for preserving indigenous traditions, community gatherings and cultural practices.

The term is commonly understood as referring to a pure or sacred house, with Nyedar associated with purity and Namlo with a house or place of worship.

What is the Donyi-Polo Faith?

Donyi-Polo is an indigenous belief system prevalent among several Tani tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh.

Donyi means Sun.
Polo means Moon.
The belief system emphasises nature, truth, harmony and community life.
It is associated with communities such as the Nyishi, Adi, Galo and Apatani.

The tradition reflects the close relationship between indigenous communities and their natural environment.

Historical Significance of Nyedar Namlo

The organised Nyedar Namlo movement among the Nyishi community developed during the early 2000s.

An organised prayer system was established at Doimukh in 2001, after which the movement expanded to other Nyishi-populated areas.

The development of such institutions has contributed to the preservation and organised practice of indigenous religious and cultural traditions.
