The World Health Organisation (WHO) Member States created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw attention to the tobacco pandemic and the unnecessary illness and death it causes. The World Health Assembly adopted a resolution on May 15, 1987, declaring April 7, 1988, as “World No Smoking Day.” The date was chosen because it marked the 40th anniversary of the World Health Organisation. Additionally, a resolution commemorating World No Tobacco Day was adopted in 1988, and it is observed on May 31 every year.

“We Need Food, Not Tobacco” is the theme for World No Tobacco Day this year. The 2023 global campaign intends to encourage tobacco growers to produce nutrient-dense, sustainable crops by increasing awareness of alternative crop production and marketing prospects.
