What is Thirukkural?

The Thirukkural, also known simply as the Kural, is a classical Tamil work traditionally attributed to Thiruvalluvar, the celebrated Tamil poet-philosopher.

The text consists of 1,330 couplets, known as kurals, organised into 133 chapters, with each chapter containing 10 couplets.

Unlike a work devoted to a single subject, the Thirukkural addresses a wide range of issues concerning individual conduct, family life, society, governance, economic activity and human relationships.

Key Facts

  • Author: Traditionally attributed to Thiruvalluvar
  • Language: Classical Tamil
  • Couplets: 1,330
  • Chapters: 133
  • Couplets per chapter: 10
  • Major divisions: Aram, Porul and Inbam
  • Genre: Ethical and didactic literature

Three Sections of Thirukkural

The 133 chapters are divided into three broad sections:

Section Meaning Major Themes
Aram Virtue Ethics, morality, self-control, compassion and family life
Porul Wealth/Worldly Affairs Governance, justice, administration, economy and society
Inbam Love Love, emotions and human relationships

1. Aram – Virtue

Aram deals with righteous conduct and personal morality. It discusses qualities such as truthfulness, compassion, self-control, humility, generosity and hospitality.

2. Porul – Worldly Affairs

Porul focuses on social and political life. It includes discussions on kingship, ministers, diplomacy, justice, military preparedness, agriculture, friendship and administration.

This section makes the Thirukkural particularly relevant to discussions on ethical governance and leadership.

3. Inbam – Love

Inbam deals with love and emotional relationships, presenting the human and emotional dimensions of life.

How Old is Thirukkural?

The exact date of composition of the Thirukkural remains a matter of scholarly debate.

Different scholars have proposed dates ranging from the late centuries BCE to the early centuries CE. Therefore, describing it categorically as a “2,500-year-old text” would be historically overconfident.

Nevertheless, the Thirukkural is recognised as an ancient and foundational work of Tamil literary tradition and has retained its influence over many centuries.

Key Teachings of Thirukkural

The Thirukkural offers practical reflections on both personal and public life.

Its major teachings include:

  • Truthfulness and integrity
  • Self-discipline and self-control
  • Compassion and non-violence
  • Humility
  • Education and learning
  • Generosity and hospitality
  • Importance of good friendship
  • Justice and fairness
  • Ethical leadership
  • Good governance
  • Responsible economic activity
  • Family and social relationships
  • Love and emotional well-being

A major strength of the work is its connection between personal morality and public responsibility.

Thirukkural and Good Governance

The Porul section provides important insights into political and administrative ethics.

It discusses the qualities expected of:

  • A good ruler
  • Ministers and advisers
  • Administrators
  • Diplomats
  • Citizens

It also deals with subjects such as justice, taxation, defence, diplomacy, agriculture and statecraft.

Thus, the text can be studied not merely as literature but also as a source of ideas on leadership, governance and social responsibility.

Why Did PM Modi Gift Thirukkural to Putin?

Gifting the Thirukkural in Russian translation carries important cultural-diplomatic significance.

It helps:

  1. Showcase India’s classical literary heritage.
  2. Highlight the cultural contribution of Tamil civilisation.
  3. Promote Tamil literature internationally.
  4. Make Thiruvalluvar’s ideas accessible to Russian-speaking readers.
  5. Strengthen the cultural dimension of India–Russia relations.
  6. Present Indian traditions as a source of universal human values.

The gift therefore exemplifies cultural diplomacy and soft power.
