Context: During the 62nd meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga, the focus was on the conservation of critical wetlands in the Ganga basin for the overall ecosystem restoration of the Ganga basin.
Restoration of Nathmalpur Bhagad Wetland
- During the meeting, the Executive Committee of National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) approved the ‘Conserving and sustainable management of Nathmalpur Bhagad wetland in Bhojpur, district of Bihar’ project with an estimated cost of Rs 3.51 crores.
- Nathmalpur Wetland is an oxbow lake located close to the Ganga River, through which this lake is connected through a small channel.
- Nathmalpur wetland is located close to the confluence of the Ganga, Sone and Ghaghara Rivers.
Wetland Restoration under NMCG
As of the date, under the Namami Ganga project, restoration of 5 wetlands has been undertaken. They are:
- Kalewada Jheel, Muzaffarnagar district, UP.
- Namiya Dah Jheel, Prayagraj, UP.
- Reoti Dah Wetland, Ballia, UP
- Udhwa Lake (Ramsar site) Sahibganj, Jharkhand
- Nathmalpur Bhagad Wetland, Bhojpur, Bihar
The Namami Ganga project involves:
- Integrating biodiversity and ecosystem service values into river basin conservation and developmental planning.
- Dual approach of management and interventions in sub-basin (Ghaghra, Gomti & Sone confluence) and site levels.
- Interventions like wetland delineation, hydrological regime enhancement, species and habitat conservation, ecological assessment, risk evaluation, capacity building, and monitoring mechanisms for ensuring long-term health and sustainability of the wetland ecosystem.
