Hydroseeding: Meaning, Process, Benefits and Applications in Mining

Context

Tata Steel has introduced hydroseeding at its West Bokaro Division, Ramgarh district, Jharkhand. It covers over 50 acres of mined land, nurseries and overburden dumps, and is the first such initiative in the state.

About Hydroseeding

  1. Nature: A mechanised planting method. A slurry of seeds, mulch, fertiliser, binder (tackifier) and soil conditioners is sprayed at high pressure over bare ground.
  2. Aim: To quickly grow green cover on disturbed land, stabilise slopes, stop wind and water erosion of topsoil and reclaim overburden dumps with little manual planting.

How It Works

  1. Slurry Mixing: Water, seed blends, wood-fibre or cellulose mulch, bio-fertilisers and tackifiers are mixed in a truck-mounted tank.
  2. Spraying: A high-power cannon or hose sprays the slurry. It sticks to bare soil and steep slopes, with a throw of up to 50 m, covering slopes up to 80 m.
  3. Microclimate: The mulch crust holds moisture, shields seeds from harsh sun and birds and controls temperature. This speeds up germination and root growth.

Key Features

  1. Long Reach: Treats steep, inaccessible slopes without workers climbing them.
  2. Protective Mat: Seeds, mulch and tackifier form a moisture-holding, erosion-resistant mat that grips loose soil.
  3. Custom Mix: Can include native grass, shrub and legume seeds and soil-specific organic conditioners.
  4. Speed and Scale: Covers dozens of acres in a day, much faster than dry broadcasting or manual sapling planting.

Advantages

  1. Erosion Control: Binds fine soil at once, preventing rain washouts, rill erosion and dump-slope landslides.
  2. Faster Growth: Nutrient-rich slurry gives seeds instant moisture and fertility, leading to even sprouting and dense roots.
  3. Low Cost: Cuts labour and transport costs compared with sodding or hand-planting.
  4. Worker Safety: Reduces work on unstable scree slopes and steep mining benches.
