Table of Contents

The South Central Railway (SCR) is one of the 17 zones of the Indian Railways. It is headquartered in Secunderabad, Telangana.  Secunderabad, the twin suburb of Hyderabad is a bustling railway station at all times. There was an ever-growing demand for energy. In recent years, the SCR has been taking steps to reduce its environmental impact. One of the key initiatives has been the adoption of green energy.

Initiatives

The SCR has implemented a number of green energy initiatives, including:

  • Solar power: The SCR has commissioned a number of solar power plants at its stations and workshops. The largest of these is a 525 kWp plant at Secunderabad station.
  • LED lighting: The SCR has replaced all of its conventional lighting with LED lights. This has resulted in significant energy savings.
  • Water conservation: The SCR has installed solar pumps at its stations to provide water for drinking and irrigation. This has helped to reduce the amount of water that is drawn from the grid.

Impact

  • The SCR’s green energy initiatives have had a significant impact. In the first two years of the program, the SCR saved over ₹53 lakhs (US$70,000) on its energy bills. It also reduced its carbon footprint by over 528 tonnes.
  • The SCR’s green energy initiatives have been recognized by a number of organizations. In 2017, the SCR was awarded the “Best Green Railway Station” award by the Ministry of Railways.

Conclusion

The SCR’s green energy initiatives are a model for other organizations. They show that it is possible to reduce environmental impact while also saving money.
