Fast Track Immigration: Trusted Travellers Programme (FTI-TTP)

Context: The Union Home Minister inaugurated FTI-TTP at Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Trichy, Kozhikode, and Amritsar airports.

The Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) is an advanced system introduced to streamline and expedite immigration processes for international travellers using automated e-gates. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and reduce wait times at key airports across India.

Fast Track Immigration: Trusted Travellers Programme

  • Fast Track Immigration: Trusted Travellers Programme is an initiative to provide seamless, faster, and more secure immigration clearance for Indian citizens and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders at international airports.

Functioning

  • Registered travellers use automated e-Gates at airports.
  • Process: Scan boarding pass + passport → biometric verification → gate opens → immigration clearance in ~30 seconds.
  • Eliminates long queues and manual checking.

Key Highlights of FTI-TTP

Objective:

To provide faster and hassle-free immigration clearance for eligible travellers by leveraging technology.

Launched By:

The Union Home Ministry, through the Bureau of Immigration.

Airports Covered:

Initially rolled out at Delhi’s IGI Airport in June 2024, the programme has now been extended to:

  • Mumbai
  • Chennai
  • Kolkata
  • Bengaluru
  • Hyderabad
  • Cochin
  • Ahmedabad

Implementation Phases of FTI-TTP

  1. Phase 1: Covers Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders.
  2. Phase 2: Will extend the service to foreign travellers.

How FTI-TTP Works:

  1. Registration:
    • Travellers register on the FTI-TTP portal.
    • Upload and verify the necessary documents.
    • Approved travellers are added to a Trusted Traveller whitelist.
  2. At the Airport:
    • Passengers scan their boarding pass and passport at automated e-gates.
    • Biometrics (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition) are used for authentication.
    • Upon successful validation, the e-gates open, granting automatic immigration clearance.

Validity of Registration:

  • Registration remains valid until the passport expires or for a period of five years, whichever is earlier.

Benefits of FTI-TTP

  1. Reduced Wait Times: Faster immigration processing through e-gates.
  2. Efficient Workflow: Automation minimises manual intervention.
  3. Convenience: Enhances the travel experience for frequent international flyers.
  4. Scalability: Expands the scope of efficient immigration to a broader demographic, including foreign travellers in Phase 2.
