E.COLI Outbreak

Context

One person has died and 10 have been hospitalised in the US due to an E.coli infection after eating McDonald’s burgers.

About Escherichia coli (E.COLI)

• It is a type of bacteria (rod shaped) commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals.
• While most strains are harmless and play a vital role in gut health, some strains can cause serious illness such as diarrhoea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia.
• Transmission: Pathogenic E. coli can be transmitted to humans through contaminated food, water or contact with faecal matter from infected individuals or animals.
• coli is a common cause of gastrointestinal illness in India, spreading through contaminated food and water.
