National Civil Services Day History

The term “civil service” first appeared during the British era, when employees of the British East India Company who worked in administrative positions were referred to as “public servants.” Warren Hastings created the groundwork for it, while Charles Cornwallis later made additional reforms, earning him the title “Father of Civil Services in India”.

The date of April 21 was chosen to honour the day when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the nation’s first home minister after independence, spoke to Administrative Services Officer probationers at Metcalf House in Delhi on that day in 1947. The “steel frame of India,” as he put it, is made up of public officials. The Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and an extensive list of All India Services and Central Services Group A and Group B make up the country’s civil service. The day of April 21 has been set aside to honour those who work in the civil service and to remember their past contributions. Civil Services Day Significance

On this day, the Prime Minister of India presents Awards for Excellence to the nation’s government officials in recognition of their noteworthy achievements in public service. So the main objectives are:

The Indian Prime Minister honours nearly all of the officers of the Central and State Governments on this day for their remarkable contributions to public administration. Civil Services Day Reasons for Celebration

The All India Administrative Service Training School in Metcalfe House, Delhi, where Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the Home Minister of Independent India, addressed the probationary officers on April 21, 1947, is where it all began. He gave a stirring speech that inspired the civil servants to put the past behind them and take on the genuine role of national service. He described civil servants as the “steel frame of India” in his speech.

On April 21, 2006, Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi hosted the first such event. The next year, April 21 was designated as National Civil Service Day.
