Bakhira Lake, located in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as an important natural archive of India’s past climate. Analysis of its sediments has reconstructed nearly 25,000 years of Indian Summer Monsoon variability, spanning the Last Glacial Maximum to the present.

Researchers analysed lake sediments using environmental magnetic properties, along with:

  • Grain-size analysis
  • Geochemistry
  • Clay mineralogy
  • Seven AMS radiocarbon dates

These proxies help reconstruct changes in rainfall, sediment supply, erosion and monsoon intensity over thousands of years.

  • Bølling–Allerød warming
  • Younger Dryas
  • Holocene Climatic Optimum
  • Late-Holocene drought phases

Why Is It Important?

The Bakhira Lake record provides a long-term perspective on Indian Summer Monsoon variability. Such palaeoclimate records can help scientists improve climate models and understand how the monsoon responds to natural climate forcing.

For the Central Ganga Plain, the findings also have practical relevance for agriculture, drought preparedness, flood management and long-term water-resource planning.
