The Asian wild pig is in the news amid growing concerns over the conservation of wild pig species in South and Southeast Asia. Habitat loss, hunting, fragmentation and African Swine Fever (ASF) are putting additional pressure on several vulnerable species.

About Asian Wild Pig

Family: Suidae
Found mainly across South and Southeast Asia.
The group includes wild boars, warty pigs and babirusas.
Several Asian wild pig species have restricted geographic ranges and declining populations.

Habitat

Asian wild pigs occupy a variety of habitats, including:

Tropical and subtropical forests
Grasslands and wetlands
Forest edges
Areas close to water sources
Dense vegetation and agricultural landscapes in some regions

Behaviour

Generally omnivorous, feeding on roots, tubers, fruits, seeds, insects and small animals.
Many species are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular.
Use their strong snouts for rooting and digging in soil.
Several species are social and live in groups, while adult males of some species may be solitary.

African Swine Fever (ASF)

African Swine Fever is one of the major emerging threats to wild and domestic pig populations.

Caused by African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV).
Affects domestic and wild pigs.
Can result in very high mortality in susceptible populations.
Not zoonotic: ASF does not infect humans.
Disease outbreaks can have consequences for wildlife conservation, livestock production and food security.
