Project Elephant

Major Threats to Asian Elephants
1. Habitat Fragmentation
Expansion of agriculture, settlements, mining and infrastructure can divide elephant habitats into smaller, isolated patches.
2. Human-Elephant Conflict
As elephant habitats overlap increasingly with human settlements and agricultural areas, crop damage and retaliatory killings can increase.
3. Railway and Road Accidents
Linear infrastructure passing through elephant habitats and corridors can result in fatal collisions.
4. Electrocution
Uninsulated power lines and poorly designed electrical infrastructure pose a serious threat to elephants.
5. Loss of Corridors
Elephants require large connected landscapes for seasonal movement. Blocking traditional movement routes can intensify conflict and restrict gene flow.
DNA-Based Elephant Population Estimation
Conventional elephant estimation has relied on methods such as direct sightings, dung counts and other indirect indicators. DNA-based estimation provides an additional scientific tool by using genetic information to identify individual elephants.
This can help:
- Improve population estimates.
- Minimise double-counting.
- Identify individual animals.
- Generate better information for long-term conservation planning.
Why Are Elephants Important to the Ecosystem?
Elephants are often described as ecosystem engineers because their feeding and movement can substantially modify habitats.
They can:
