Why is Sohar Port in News?
Oman highlighted Sohar Port and Freezone during a business roadshow in New Delhi in September 2026, seeking to attract Indian manufacturers, exporters and logistics companies. The initiative focuses on strengthening trade and investment links between India and Oman and providing Indian businesses access to Middle Eastern and wider international markets.
Sohar has also featured in recent energy-transport developments. Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia has used ship-to-ship crude transfers off Sohar to facilitate crude shipments to Asian markets amid disruptions affecting conventional Gulf routes.
Where is Sohar Port Located?
Sohar Port is located in northern Oman on the Gulf of Oman.
Its geographical position is particularly important for UPSC because it is outside the Strait of Hormuz.
The maritime sequence is:
Persian Gulf → Strait of Hormuz → Gulf of Oman → Arabian Sea → Indian Ocean
The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
Prelims Fact: Sohar Port is located on the Gulf of Oman, not the Persian Gulf.
Sohar Port and Freezone
Sohar is more than a conventional seaport. It forms an integrated port-industrial-logistics ecosystem with the adjacent Sohar Freezone.
The facility supports industries including:
- Petrochemicals
- Metals and minerals
- Plastics
- Food processing
- Pharmaceuticals
- Logistics
- Renewable energy
- Automotive
- High-tech manufacturing
According to the official Sohar Port and Freezone website, the facility has 75 million tonnes of total annual throughput and 2.46 million TEUs of annual container-terminal capacity. It also reports total trade volume of US$44 billion through the port and Freezone.
Strategic Importance of Sohar Port
Maritime Connectivity
Sohar’s position on the Gulf of Oman provides maritime connectivity toward the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. Its location makes it an important component of Oman’s wider strategy to develop itself as a logistics and industrial hub.
Energy Security
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s major energy chokepoints. Consequently, ports and logistics infrastructure on Oman’s Gulf of Oman coastline have strategic importance when shipping through the Strait faces disruption.
Recent Saudi crude transfers through Sohar demonstrate how the port can participate in alternative logistics arrangements during regional disruptions.
However, Sohar’s location outside Hormuz does not mean that every cargo using the port automatically bypasses the Strait; individual routes depend on their origin, destination and operational circumstances.
Sohar Port and India
Sohar is increasingly relevant to India’s trade and maritime connectivity with Oman.
The India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) entered into force on 1 June 2026. The agreement was signed on 18 December 2025.
The Government of India identifies Oman’s logistics hubs at Sohar, Duqm and Salalah as important gateways for India’s regional trade connectivity with the GCC and East Africa. Bilateral trade between India and Oman reached US$11.18 billion in FY 2025–26, according to PIB.
Thus, Sohar is relevant to India’s:
- Gulf trade
- Supply-chain diversification
- Maritime connectivity
- Export expansion
- Energy-security discussions
- Access to GCC markets
Sohar, Duqm and Salalah
Oman’s major ports have different geographical and economic roles:
| Port | Location | Major Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Sohar | Gulf of Oman | Industrial and logistics hub |
| Duqm | Arabian Sea coast | Deep-sea port and industrial zone |
| Salalah | Southern Oman | Major trans-shipment hub |
