The examination is mainly meant for candidates with relevant postgraduate qualifications in scientific and Earth Science disciplines.

Important: Stream Selection

Candidates holding certain qualifications such as a Master’s degree in Geo-Exploration or Applied Geology may be eligible for more than one stream. However, while applying, they have to select one stream/discipline—Geophysics or Geology/Hydrogeology—and can apply for posts under that selected stream.

UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Age Limit

Candidates must be at least 21 years old and below 32 years of age as on January 1, 2027.

In general, candidates must have been born:

Not earlier than January 2, 1995
Not later than January 1, 2006

Age relaxation is available to eligible reserved and other categories as per the rules mentioned in the official notification.

UPSC Geo-Scientist Application Fee

The application fee is ₹200.

OBC and EWS candidates are not exempted from the application fee. The fee can be paid online through net banking, credit/debit card or UPI.

UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Exam Pattern 2027

The selection process has three stages:

Preliminary Examination → Main Examination → Personality Test/Interview

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is objective-type and carries 400 marks.

• General Studies: 100 marks, 2 hours
• Stream-specific Paper: 300 marks, 2 hours
• Total: 400 marks

The stream-specific paper depends on the candidate’s chosen discipline—Geology/Hydrogeology, Geophysics or Chemistry.

There is negative marking, with one-third of the marks assigned to a question deducted for an incorrect answer.

Stage 2: Main Examination

Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Examination move to the descriptive Main Examination.

It consists of three papers of 200 marks each, making the Main Examination worth 600 marks in total. Each paper has a duration of three hours.

Stage 3: Personality Test

Candidates qualifying for the Personality Test/Interview are assessed for 200 marks. The final merit is prepared using the marks obtained at the prescribed stages of the examination.
