Since 27 June 2017, the day has been celebrated annually to recognize the significant role played by MSMEs in:
- Employment generation
- Poverty reduction
- Innovation
- Industrialization
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The observance supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasizing entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth.
What are MSMEs?
MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) are businesses classified based on investment and annual turnover. They operate across manufacturing, services, retail, trade, agriculture, and other sectors.
These enterprises are considered the backbone of economies because they create jobs, promote innovation, encourage local manufacturing, and support regional development.
Why are MSMEs Important?
MSMEs contribute significantly to national and global economies by:
- Creating employment opportunities
- Promoting entrepreneurship
- Increasing industrial production
- Encouraging innovation
- Supporting exports
- Reducing regional inequalities
- Strengthening local supply chains
- Enhancing inclusive economic growth
According to the United Nations:
- MSMEs account for over 90% of businesses worldwide.
- They generate a major share of global employment.
- They contribute significantly to GDP in most economies.
- They play an important role in empowering women and youth entrepreneurs.
India’s MSME Sector: Key Facts
India has one of the world’s largest MSME ecosystems.
According to recent government data:
- More than 7.4 crore MSMEs are registered on the Udyam and Udyam Assist platforms.
- The sector provides employment to over 32 crore people.
- MSMEs contribute approximately 31% of India’s GDP.
- They account for 35.4% of manufacturing output.
- Nearly 50% of India’s exports originate from MSMEs.
The sector includes manufacturers, retailers, traders, service providers, startups, artisans, and micro-entrepreneurs.
Digital Transformation of Indian MSMEs
Digital technologies are transforming how MSMEs operate.
A nationwide survey covering over 16,000 MSMEs across 137 districts found that:
- 8 out of 10 MSMEs expect greater use of B2B digital marketplaces over the next two years.
- Around 70% have increased their reliance on digital procurement platforms in the last two years.
- Wider product selection, better pricing, supplier comparison, GST-compliant invoicing, and spend management are major reasons for adopting digital procurement.
Government initiatives such as GeM, ONDC, digital payments, GST, and the ₹10,000 crore SME Growth Fund announced in Union Budget 2026–27 are accelerating digital adoption.
Major Challenges Faced by MSMEs
Despite their importance, MSMEs continue to face several structural and financial challenges.
Limited Access to Finance
Many MSMEs struggle to obtain affordable credit because of inadequate collateral, limited credit history, and financing gaps.
Price Volatility
Frequent fluctuations in raw material prices increase production costs and reduce profitability.
Supplier Management
Managing multiple suppliers and ensuring timely procurement remains difficult, particularly for micro enterprises.
GST Compliance
Obtaining GST-compliant invoices and maintaining proper documentation continue to be operational challenges.
Digital Divide
Many businesses still lack digital infrastructure, technical expertise, and awareness of digital tools.
Payment Delays
Delayed payments from buyers affect cash flow and working capital, especially for small businesses.
MSMEs and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
MSMEs contribute directly to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 1: No Poverty
- SDG 5: Gender Equality
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
