About Tawi River
Tributary & Importance
- A major left-bank tributary of the Chenab River.
- Holds sacred significance, often referred to as “Surya Putri” in ancient texts.
Origin & Course
- Originates from Kalpas Kund in Seo Dhar, Bhaderwah (Doda district, J&K).
- Flows down to Sudh Mahadev, covering about 141 km.
- Crosses steep hills and plains before entering Pakistan’s Punjab province, where it merges with the Chenab River.
Catchment Area
- The total catchment area up to the Indian border (Jammu) is 2,168 sq. km.
- Spread across Jammu, Udhampur, and a small part of the Doda district.
Tributaries
- Joined by several streams, including Bhuteshwari (Birma), Duddhar, and Jajjhar.
Geographical & Urban Role
- Divides Jammu city into two parts:
- Old Jammu town is located on a hill overlooking the river.
- New Jammu town is situated across the river.
- Acts as the primary water source for the city of Jammu.
