The Orinoco Mining Arc (Arco Minero del Orinoco)
This is a strategic development zone created in 2016, covering about 12% of Venezuela’s territory (approx. 111,800 sq. km).
- Location: South of the Orinoco River, spanning the states of Bolívar, Amazonas, and Delta Amacuro.
- Geology: It sits on the Guiana Shield, a 1.7-billion-year-old geological formation shared with Guyana and Brazil, rich in ancient hard-rock minerals.
- Environmental Concern: The arc overlaps with the Amazon rainforest and is near the Canaima National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
