Mineral Resources in Venezuela: Gold, Iron Ore, Bauxite, Diamonds and Critical Minerals

Context

Following the removal of the Maduro administration, the U.S. is moving to secure not just oil, but critical minerals essential for high-tech industries and the energy transition.

The Orinoco Mining Arc (Arco Minero del Orinoco)

This is a strategic development zone created in 2016, covering about 12% of Venezuela’s territory (approx. 111,800 sq. km).

  • Location: South of the Orinoco River, spanning the states of Bolívar, Amazonas, and Delta Amacuro.
  • Geology: It sits on the Guiana Shield, a 1.7-billion-year-old geological formation shared with Guyana and Brazil, rich in ancient hard-rock minerals.
  • Environmental Concern: The arc overlaps with the Amazon rainforest and is near the Canaima National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Key Minerals and Their Uses

Mineral Significance in Venezuela Global/Industrial Use
Coltan Significant deposits in the Orinoco Arc, often called “blue gold.” Contains Tantalum and Niobium; used in smartphones, laptops, and capacitors.
Bauxite Reserves are estimated at over 320 million tonnes; Los Pijiguaos is a major mine. The primary ore for Aluminum; critical for EVs and aerospace.
Gold Venezuela potentially ranks among the top 5 globally in gold endowment. Financial reserves and industrial electronics.
Iron Ore 8th largest reserves in the world (approx. 14.7 billion metric tons). Steel manufacturing and infrastructure.
Rare Earths Deposits of Thorium and elements like Neodymium have been identified. Permanent magnets for wind turbines and EV motors.
