History of Vigilance Awareness Week

Vigilance Awareness Week is organised annually under the aegis of the Central Vigilance Commission. It is associated with the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, observed on October 31, who is widely remembered for his commitment to national unity, integrity and public service.

The Central Vigilance Commission was established in 1964 following the recommendations of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption, chaired by K. Santhanam. The Commission was subsequently granted statutory status through the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003.

The annual observance seeks to build awareness about corruption prevention and encourage individuals and institutions to adopt ethical practices.
