Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) achieved tulip flowering in December using advanced bulb programming and forcing techniques.
About Bulb Programming & Forcing
- Bulb Programming: A technique used to control the timing of flower production by adjusting environmental factors like temperature and light to manage growth stages.
- Forcing: A process that involves manipulating chemical and environmental conditions to induce plants to bloom outside their natural seasonal cycle.
- Significance: This is the first time these techniques, common in the Netherlands, have been successfully implemented in the Kashmir Valley.

About Tulip (Genus: Tulipa) |
| ● A perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophyte belonging to the Liliaceae family.
● Climatic Requirements: Tulips require a period of vernalization (exposure to cold temperatures) to trigger flowering. ● Native Region: While associated with the Netherlands, tulips are native to Central Asia (Bokhara region). ● Zabarwan Range: The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Asia’s largest, is situated at the foothills of this range. ● A Centre of Excellence for Tulip Cultivation has been established at Sagam (Anantnag) to focus on local “bulb propagation” and multiplication. |
