History of Krishna Janmashtami
The festival has deep roots in ancient Hindu texts, particularly the Bhagavata Purana, Harivamsa, and Vishnu Purana.
Lord Krishna was born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura, inside a prison cell where his parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, were kept captive by King Kansa, Devaki’s brother. Kansa had been warned that Devaki’s eighth child would be the cause of his death. To prevent this, he imprisoned the couple and killed their first seven children. But when Krishna was born, Vasudeva took him miraculously across the Yamuna River to Gokul and handed him over to Yashoda and Nanda for upbringing.
Krishna killed Kansa later and established Dharma (righteousness), representing the victory of good over evil.
