Indonesia Signs BrahMos Missile Deal with India

Context

Indonesia has signed an agreement to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from India, becoming the second foreign buyer after the Philippines. It is produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia.

About the BrahMos Missile System

BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile capable of flying at speeds of around Mach 2.8–3, making it one of the fastest cruise missiles currently in service.

Multi-Platform Launch Capability: The missile can be launched from multiple platforms:

●     Land-based mobile launchers

●     Warships and submarines

●     Combat aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su30MKI

●     Coastal defence batteries

Operational Range and Precision

●     BrahMos has a range of around 290–500 km depending on variants, and is equipped with advanced guidance systems enabling high precision strikes against land and maritime targets.

Key Weapon of the Indian Armed Forces: The missile is deployed across all three services of the Indian military:

●     Indian Army – land-attack missions

●     Indian Navy – anti-ship warfare

●     Indian Air Force – air-launched strike capability

Future Developments

●     Next-Generation BrahMos: India and Russia are reportedly working on an upgraded BrahMos-II hypersonic missile, expected to achieve speeds above Mach 5.

●     Expansion of Export Markets: India is actively negotiating further export deals with multiple countries, which could significantly expand its global presence in the defence market

Details of the Indonesia Deal

  • Second International Customer: Indonesia becomes the second foreign country to purchase BrahMos, after the Philippines signed a $375-million coastal defence deal in 2022.
  • Estimated Value: Earlier discussions suggested the deal could be worth $200–350 million, although the final contract value has not been publicly confirmed.
  • Strategic Importance: The missile will help Indonesia strengthen its coastal defence and deterrence capabilities, particularly in contested maritime zones in Southeast Asia.
  • Enhancing India’s Strategic Influence: Supplying advanced weapons systems enhances India’s role as a security provider in the region.

India’s Defence Export Push

  • Export Target: India aims to increase defence exports to $5 billion annually, reflecting the government’s effort to transform the country into a major defence manufacturing hub.
  • BrahMos as a Flagship Export: The BrahMos missile is considered India’s flagship defence export product, attracting interest from several countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and UAE
  • Strategic Partnerships: Defence exports are increasingly being used as a tool of strategic diplomacy, helping India strengthen partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
