India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline: Features, Route, and Strategic Significance

Context

  • India has supplied 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh through the India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline as the neighbouring country faces a fuel shortage amid disruptions in global energy supply linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict.

India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline

The India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline (IBFP) is a cross-border petroleum pipeline connecting:

●     Numaligarh, Assam in India

●     Parbatipur, Bangladesh

The pipeline was jointly developed to facilitate efficient fuel supply between the two countries.

Key Features

●     Length: about 131 km

●     Capacity: around 1 million metric tonnes of diesel annually

●     Operational since 2023

The pipeline significantly reduces the cost and time involved in transporting petroleum products compared with road or rail transport

India’s Diesel Supply to Bangladesh

  • Recent Shipment: India recently supplied 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel through the pipeline to help Bangladesh address its immediate fuel shortage.
  • Commercial Energy Trade: Bangladesh has been purchasing diesel from Numaligarh Refinery since 2015 on a commercial basis, and the pipeline has strengthened this long-standing energy partnership.
  • Possibility of Additional Supplies: Bangladesh has requested additional petroleum supplies. However, Indian officials have stated that any further shipments will depend on:
    • domestic fuel availability in India
    • evolving supply conditions in global energy markets.

Strategic Importance of the Friendship Pipeline

  • Strengthening Energy Connectivity: The pipeline represents a key component of India’s broader effort to enhance energy connectivity in South Asia.
  • Reliable Fuel Supply for Bangladesh: Direct pipeline transport ensures a stable and uninterrupted supply of diesel, which is critical for Bangladesh’s transport and power sectors.
  • Reduced Transportation Costs: Pipeline delivery is significantly cheaper and more efficient than transporting fuel via trucks or railways
