During the Budget 2025-26, Gyan Bharatam Mission was announced as a flagship mission of the Ministry of Culture for unearthing, safeguarding and preserving India’s vast manuscript heritage.
About Gyan Bharatam Mission
- National initiative to preserve, digitise & disseminate India’s vast manuscript heritage, integrating tradition with technology for future generations.
- Ministry: Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
- Funding: Rs 491 crores from the period of 2025-31.
- Focus Verticals under Gyan Bharatam Mission:
- (i) Survey & Cataloging
- (ii) Conservation & Capacity Building
- (iii) Technology & Digitisation
- (iv) Linguistics & Translation
- (v) Research, Publication & Outreach.
Initiatives under Gyan Bharatam Mission
- Establish a nation-wide network of Cluster Centres (CC) & Independent Centres (ICs) across the country.
- Digitisation of manuscripts:
- The scheme mandates the digitisation of manuscripts and their public availability on the Gyanbharatam website.
- The scheme mandates strict imaging norms to ensure preservation & high-quality digital outputs.
- Basic level metadata creation & its integration on National Digital Repository (NDR) to facilitate integration of manuscripts and its metadata for global accessibility.
- Deployment of scanners & equipment across designated centers for the digitization of manuscripts.
- Building a fully functional, AI-integrated digital platform and mobile application.
- Providing continuous hot, cold, cloud-based storage hosting, backup, and security support.
- Data storage using LTO-9 tape for long-term archival and disaster recovery management.
