India’s First National Checklist of Fireflies: Key Findings and Significance

Context

Researchers have published the first-of-its-kind comprehensive checklist of Indian fireflies in the journal Zootaxa, documenting 92 species across 27 genera based on records spanning from 1881 to 2025.

Key Findings of the Study

  • Species Diversity: India is home to 92 species of fireflies.
  • High Endemism: More than 60% of these species are endemic to India (found nowhere else in the world).
  • Distribution: Fireflies have been documented across 22 States and one Union Territory in India.

About Fireflies

  • Order:Coleoptera (Beetles).
  • Family:Lampyridae.
  • Characteristics: Fireflies are actually nocturnal beetles. They are best known for bioluminescence—the production of light through a chemical reaction in their lower abdomen.

Bioluminescence

●     Chemical Reaction: The light is produced when a pigment called luciferin reacts with oxygen in the presence of the enzyme luciferase.

●     Efficiency: Unlike a lightbulb, which wastes energy as heat, a firefly’s light is a “cold light,” meaning nearly 100% of the energy is emitted as light.

●     Purpose: Primarily used for communication (finding mates) and as a defense mechanism (warning predators of their bitter taste).
