Context

Researchers have published the first-of-its-kind comprehensive checklist of Indian fireflies in the journal Zootaxa, documenting 92 species across 27 genera based on records spanning from 1881 to 2025.

Key Findings of the Study

Species Diversity: India is home to 92 species of fireflies.
High Endemism: More than 60% of these species are endemic to India (found nowhere else in the world).
Distribution: Fireflies have been documented across 22 States and one Union Territory in India.

About Fireflies

Order:Coleoptera (Beetles).
Family:Lampyridae.
Characteristics: Fireflies are actually nocturnal beetles. They are best known for bioluminescence—the production of light through a chemical reaction in their lower abdomen.

Bioluminescence

● Chemical Reaction: The light is produced when a pigment called luciferin reacts with oxygen in the presence of the enzyme luciferase.

● Efficiency: Unlike a lightbulb, which wastes energy as heat, a firefly’s light is a “cold light,” meaning nearly 100% of the energy is emitted as light.

● Purpose: Primarily used for communication (finding mates) and as a defense mechanism (warning predators of their bitter taste).
