Athira Sugathan is an inspiring civil services aspirant from Kerala who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2025, securing All India Rank (AIR) 483. Early Life and Education

Athira Sugathan is a native of Kozhikode, Kerala. She was pursuing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree in Bengaluru when a tragic accident changed her life.

During her student years, Athira had ambitions of building a successful career in healthcare and public service. However, fate had a different plan.

Life-Changing Accident in 2016

In February 2016, Athira met with a serious road accident in Bengaluru. The accident caused:

• Severe physical injuries

• Long-term mobility impairment, leaving her wheelchair-bound

• Amnesia (memory loss) for nearly two years

The accident disrupted her academic life and personal identity. For a significant period, she could not even remember that she was studying dentistry.

Recovery and Completing Her Education

Athira underwent long-term treatment and rehabilitation. With time and medical support, including Ayurvedic therapy, her memory gradually returned.

Despite the enormous challenges, she decided to resume her studies. She went back to her dental college in Bengaluru and successfully completed her BDS degree, even though she had forgotten much of her earlier coursework.

This phase marked the beginning of her remarkable comeback.

Turning Point: Volunteering During COVID-19

A major turning point in Athira’s life came in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She returned to Kozhikode and began working with an NGO that supported differently-abled individuals. Interacting with people facing similar challenges changed her perspective.

She realized that real change in society often comes through policy-making and governance, which inspired her to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

UPSC Preparation Journey

Athira joined the Absolute IAS Academy in Thiruvananthapuram, which offers a specialized program called “Butterfly” designed for physically challenged UPSC aspirants.

Her preparation strategy included:

• Choosing Malayalam as her optional subject

• Attending online classes due to mobility limitations

• Studying with the help of mentors and structured coaching

• Traveling occasionally for offline sessions with the support of her parents

Her parents, Sugathan and Mini, both LIC agents, played a crucial role in supporting her emotionally and financially throughout the preparation.

Success in UPSC CSE 2025

Athira cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 in her fourth attempt, securing AIR 483.

Her achievement became widely celebrated because it demonstrated extraordinary perseverance despite severe personal challenges.

She has expressed her aspiration to become an IAS officer and work toward improving opportunities for people with disabilities and promoting inclusive development.
