Bhopal Gas Tragedy

  • International Labour Organisation (ILO) in its recent report has termed Bhopal Gas Tragedy as one of the world’s ‘major industrial accident’.
  • The report was titled “The Safety and the Health at the Heart of the Future of Work- Building on 100 years of Experience”.
  • It noted that this industrial disaster killed more than 15,000 people due to the result of at least 30 tons of highly toxic Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) gas leak in Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal in 1984.
  • It also reported that more than 600,000 workers were affected due to leak of MIC toxic gas from Union Carbide plant.
  • ILO report also talked about other major industrial accident after 1919 including Chernobyl nuclear disaster of Ukraine (1986), Fukushima nuclear disasters of Japan (2011) and Rana Plaza building collapse of Bangladesh (2013).

Ravinder Kumar Passi appointed Chairman of EPCH

  • Ravinder Kumar Passi was elevated to post of Chairman from earlier Vice Chairman post of Export Promotion Council for Handicraft (EPCH).  He will succeed his predecessor O P Prahladka.
  • Passi had been part of EPCH since its establishment in 1986-87. He has served EPCH in various important positions including post of Chairman during 2001-2002.

Reliance Retail tops Rs. 1 lakh crore revenue

  • The retail arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries- Reliance Retail became India’s first retail company to cross Rs.1 lakh crore annual revenue.
  • The revenue of the company for year 2018-19 was Rs. 1.3 lakh crore, which is 89% more from previous fiscal.
  • Reliance Retail had added 2,829 stores during financial year, taking total to 10,415 stores across the country and profit of pre-tax business jumped 77.1 % to record Rs 1,923 crore.
