Q) With reference to the phenomenon of Lake effect snow, Consider the following statements:

  1. It occurs when cold, dry air passes over the warm waters of the Great Lakes in North America.
  2. A temperature difference of at least 14 degrees Celsius in the air is necessary for the phenomenon to occur.
  3. The direction of the wind and the orography has a profound impact on the rate of snowfall.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. 1 and 2 only
  2. 1 and 3 only
  3. 2 and 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: Lake-effect Snow starts with cold, dry air from Canada. As the bitter cold air sweeps across the relatively warmer Great Lakes, it sucks up more and more moisture that falls as snow. The mechanism is influenced by the differences between the amount of heat and moisture at the lake surface and in the air a few thousand feet above it. This often happens in late fall, when lake water is still warm from summer and cold air starts sweeping down from Canada.

Statement 2 is correct: A difference of at least 25 degrees Fahrenheit (14 Celsius) or more creates an environment that can fuel heavy snows. Temperatures lower than 25 degrees can sometimes add enough energy to create thundersnow. Thundersnow can be especially intense, sometimes falling at a clip of two to three inches per hour or more.

Statement 3 is correct: The direction of the wind is also important. If the wind is blowing in a direction that covers more of the lake, the air will act like a large sponge that gulps up water from the lake and wrings it onto the land. Wind direction also determines which areas will receive lake-effect snow. Once the snow reaches land, elevation contributes an additional effect. Land that slopes up from the lake increases lift in the atmosphere, enhancing snowfall rates. This mechanism is termed “orographic effect.”

Q) With reference to Arittapatti Biodiversity Heritage Site, consider the following statements:

  1. It is the first Biodiversity Heritage Site in the state of Tamil Nadu.

  3. 2 and 3 only
  4. 3 only

It is the first Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) to be notified in the state. The Arittapatti village is surrounded by a chain of seven barren granite hillocks that act as a watershed and support close to 72 lakes, 200 natural spring pools and three check dams. The Anaikondan Lake built during the reign of the Pandiyas in the 16th century is one among them.

Statement 2 is incorrect: The declaration has been made under the Section 37 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
