UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award 2022

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum, which is part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai World Heritage property in India, has received the Award of Excellence in this year’s UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

History

Since 2000, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation programme has been recognizing the efforts of private individuals and organizations in restoring, conserving, and transforming structures and buildings of heritage value in the region.

Award of Distinction: India

Stepwells of Golconda, Hyderabad, India received an Award of Distinction.

Award of Merit: India

Domakonda Fort, Telangana and Byculla Station, Mumbai, India received an Award of Merit.

Aim of Awards

The Awards are able to give people a sense of pride and a sense of ownership of their own heritage.

Significance of Awards

By acknowledging private efforts to restore and adapt historic properties, the Awards encourage others to undertake conservation projects within their own communities, either independently or through public-private partnerships (PPPs).

Special Recognition for Sustainable Development

West Guizhou Lilong Neighborhood, Shanghai, China received a Special Recognition for Sustainable Development i.e., a new category introduced by UNESCO in 2020.

Key Facts

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation is supported by a partnership between UNESCO and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (NTFCF) since 2021.
